Emotional problems in subnormal times
Dealing with emotions and mood swings
As adults we have undergone emotional ups and downs . Children are susceptible too.
Adaptation strategies are being worked upon, and yes, many children are indeed finding new ways of expressing their talent. Art seems to be the favourite followed by music and dance. Nurturing talent even in the adverse times is the silver lining to the dark cloud.
Outdoor sports has taken a backseat .
Teachers have been working real hard , at giving their best to their children, from preschool to primary divisions.
Meanwhile the pandemic has created its own problems, unless data is published it’s impossible for any of us to note the exact number of children displaced ,for loss of both parents to covid, or one parent or even a sibling.
A lot of charitable work is being carried out , thanks to public initiatives , children are being accommodated in foster homes or even adoption centers .
For some of us who have not been able to go out at all, this is the time to grasp all the activities of the reality, within one’s own environment, media is educating many of us on these matters .
The emotions of bereavement, failure to express oneself, wallowing in self pity, adamancy, truancy , seeking attention, distraction, sleep disturbances , day dreaming , poor listening , poor reading ....are some of the problems that would need our attention.
A number of NGO’s do indicate their 24/7 help lines. The government needs to also involve itself in collecting authentic data on the number missing , separated and of children left alone.
In the subsequent pages we will discuss these problems ,tackling them one by one.
This is a time for afflictions and affectations on the personality . We should not neglect the tell tale signs ,of especially depression.
The ray of hope in this is the affordable good parenting ,where children are being nurtured with extra care and concern, with the right stimulus of an enriched learning environment from preschoolers to primary schooling.
Parisar Asha under the leadership of Ms Aarati Savur has been doing highly commendable job, a number of art programs have been held for the children of all ages.
More than competition,its participation and healthy collaboration that brings cheer to the young.
We need to build our resources and strength to build our welfare and that of others around.
Teach them to be mentally strong
Our thoughts are very important. The more negative we think, the more sick we would feel.
Hence training our mind to think appropriately in every situation ,to be calm, composed , and be strong willed is important .
The stronger the will, the victorious we would be.
It would not be wise to expect a total normal behaviour from children ,who have gone through much insecurity and trauma. Preaching would not do, we need to be role models in front of them.
Sensitivity , good planning and good organisation of intellectual activities would keep them totally occupied.
The present day demands much from the teachers and the children, so also parents.
Today the role between a parent and a teacher has been narrowed, the home and school, at times are no different.
Thoughts that build the imagination
Imagination is a result of arranging our thought patterns ,generally in a constructive way.
Pictorial representation stirs our imagination , building an imagery of thought processes , that relate to our mental schemata , indicating our mental health too.
Anxieties, fears ,phobias , uncertainties , confidence or lack of confidence, joy and happiness are brought about through the art of expressive thought patterns.
It’s worthwhile then to make children and young adults speak out their mind.
The mind is truly a well of both positive and negative emotions, which manifest in thoughts.
Examining these thoughts is very important. They give us a sense of direction too.
