Classroom Management

Planning the classroom

The classroom becomes an enthusiastic centre  of learning,  provided a little thinking goes into making it a centre of meaningful and joyful learning.

It requires great skills at managing people and managing the curriculum content.

The lesson planning leads the children to acquiring skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Application of mind is needed in solving the given problems that requires an understanding of the concept.

The general activity planned needs to evoke the  confidence of all types of learners . A good school looks into the individual differences and considers the principles of development.

A sound lesson plan should necessarily have easy to difficult problems, helping children with higher abilities as well as lower abilities ,be able to participate without the fear of ridicule.

A lesson plan should have the content analysis, followed by the aims and objectives to be attained, that of which would determine the methodology. The methodology would vary from simple narration and following instructions to a dynamism from the teacher , by dramatisation, by story telling, through the medium of audio visuals , field trips and much more .

As an eg if the lesson is on The Train , an introduction  to the lesson plan could be done through creative questioning, structured and unstructured. It would then be followed by model reading of the text aloud .Each time the text is read aloud ,key words from the lesson could be reinforced through flash cards. Word list could be reinforced through decoding the vocabulary with the help of phonic drill. Once reading is established, copy writing of words could be done. An Educational  film ,correlated on the topic selected, like the Railway station ,a Railway yard , or even a trip to the nearby Locomotive  industry could be organised.

Difficulty level would differ according to the age group and the background information of prior knowledge.

Project work could be undertaken, bringing about simulated situations.

If at the Kindergarten especially, the planning and classroom management is informal or semi formal, and the continuation of the semi formal structure of learning in stds 1 and 2 , it then takes over  to being formal in stds 3 and 4. By then a state of Readiness has been acquired to be learning independently but of course with the Teacher support.

Planning is also needed towards inclusive education , giving facilities to the less able with a host of opportunities.

Planning is also needed for the Gifted children, so that they do not regress because the planning and opportunities aren’t challenging enough.

If the planning is done with much thought and analysis, according to the individual capacity, and the class as a whole, it surely would go along way in bringing about the ever growing need of developing the knowledge bank.

Good planning, good execution enable the management of a classroom in the most effective manner.

Discipline is an automated behaviour if the classroom is well managed , if the curriculum and the time table are well balanced, with both structured and unstructured activities, and the teaching methodology suits the level of the group of children. Too difficult or too easy creates disturbances, children need to be creatively and constructively occupied in either group or individual activities.

Children, pupils, students sense a well planned and well organised classroom, that makes them involved in the various activities with enthusiasm and interest ,showing the right aptitude.

Day in day out, we shape the future personalities , thus we need to feel responsible towards the entire school program, working towards the interest of the younger generation.
